Safety

Last updated 10 October 2026

Everything on this page is free, on every tier. Blocking, reporting, photo verification and filtering for verified people cost nothing and never will — no safety feature has ever been a sensible thing to charge for.

What Nova does

Blocking

Blocking is immediate and mutual. The moment you block someone, any match between you ends, your conversation is gone, and neither of you will ever appear in the other's deck, Explore or Likes again. They are not told that you blocked them.

Reporting

Reporting sends us the reason and anything you add. The person you report is never told who reported them. You can block at the same time, and the report form offers to do both. We keep reports for up to two years so a pattern across several people can be acted on.

No links, no Snapchat handles

Nova blocks external links and Snapchat handles in bios and messages. This is not prudishness — it is the single most effective anti-scam measure a dating app has. Nearly every scam works by moving you somewhere Nova cannot see, where there is no block button and no report button. Swap contact details when you are ready, in your own words, not through a pasted link on first contact.

Verification

A blue badge means someone took a selfie and a reviewer confirmed it matches their profile photos. The selfie is then deleted.

It means the photos are really them. It is not a background check and it says nothing about whether they are a good person. Treat it as evidence about pixels, not about character.

Reviews

Only someone who has actually matched with a person can review them, once, and only aggregate counts are ever shown. Counts stay hidden until there are enough of them that no single review decides what a profile looks like. Reviews are a useful signal, not a verdict — a couple of ghost tags might mean someone is unreliable, or might mean they had a bad month.

Your location

Other members only ever see a distance rounded to the nearest kilometre. Your coordinates never leave our database, and we only read your position while Nova is open in front of you. If you would rather not use your real position at all, Overseas mode lets you pick a city instead.

Looking after yourself

Before you meet

  • Video call first. Five minutes will tell you more than fifty messages, and it makes a fake profile very hard to sustain.
  • Keep it on Nova until you are comfortable. There is no rush to move to another app, and anyone pushing hard to do so is worth a second thought.
  • Reverse-image search their photos if something feels staged.
  • Never send money. Not a loan, not a flight, not a gift card, not crypto, not to help with an emergency — no matter how plausible or how long you have been talking. This is the most common and most expensive scam on every dating platform, and it always starts as a story that makes sense.
  • Don't share financial details, your home address, your workplace, or documents like your passport or licence.

The first date

  • Somewhere public, and somewhere you know. A coffee or a walk beats dinner: it is easy to leave.
  • Tell someone where you are going, who with, and when you expect to be back. Send them the profile.
  • Make your own way there and back. Don't be picked up at home on a first meeting.
  • Keep your drink with you, and keep your phone charged.
  • Leave whenever you want. You do not owe anyone an evening, an explanation, or politeness about it. “I'm going to head off” is a complete sentence.
  • Trust the feeling. If something is off, it does not have to be explainable to be worth acting on.

Consent

Consent is specific, enthusiastic and revocable at any point, including after it was given, including halfway through, including if you have been on ten dates. Someone who is drunk, asleep or under pressure cannot consent. Pressuring, guilting or ignoring a no is grounds for permanent removal from Nova and, more importantly, is not something you have to put up with.

If something happens

  • You are in immediate danger: contact your local emergency services first. In Australia that is 000; in the UK and much of Europe 112 or 999; in the US and Canada 911.
  • Report and block on Nova, so the same thing does not happen to someone else. You can do both from the profile or the conversation.
  • Keep what you have. Screenshots and their profile help us act and help the police if you go to them.
  • Tell us: Support@viridiandynamics.com.au. If you are reporting something serious, say so in the subject line and we will prioritise it.

Support, wherever you are

If you have experienced sexual assault or domestic violence, specialist services exist and they are free and confidential. In Australia, 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732); in the UK, the Rape Crisis helpline (0808 500 2222); in the US, the RAINN hotline (1-800-656-4673). If you are elsewhere, your local emergency service can direct you.

None of what happened was your fault, and reporting it to us is never a condition of us helping you.
